Seventy-five years ago, a St. Louis widow named Irma Rombauer took her life savings and self-published a book called The Joy of Cooking. Her daughter Marion tested recipes and made the illustrations, and they sold their mother-daughter project from Irma’s apartment. Today, nine revisions later, the Joy of Cooking — selected by The New York Public Library as one of the 150 most important and influential books of the twentieth century — has taught tens of millions of people to cook, helped feed and delight millions beyond that, answered countless kitchen and food questions, and averted many a cooking crisis.

Should I take my boyfriend to New York for 5 days for his birthday in October?

Friday, July 30th, 2010

He visited once, when he was 10, and he absolutely loved it. For his 29th birthday on Oct. I’m thinking of taking him back for 5 days. I’m also thinking of making reservations at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Times Square, since it has a kitchen and we can cook our own meals- which would be more economical of course. What do you guys think? Good idea or not? Serious answers only please!

Whats more economical is staying at a Motel 6.
Better yet, don’t take him. Just show him a DVD of New York City, that’s way cheaper. That way when you two break up you won’t regret spending all that money on his birthday present.

it’s an essay of who’s responsible for obesity in america… need help concluding

America, Home of the Fat
America, home of the free right? Wrong. America is one of the fattest nations in the world. We would think that one of the most productive and developed countries would be the healthiest. The truth however, is we are not. The question that is presented then, is who’s to blame? People always find it easier to point a finger and blame someone else. Americans are suing fast-food companies for “making them fat”, and such lawsuits are becoming more prevalent each day. Blaming the fast-food industry for obesity is like an alcoholic suing an alcohol company for giving them cirrhosis of the liver. Caesar Barber of Bronx, New York “filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Bronx Supreme Court, naming McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King and Kentucky Fried Chicken” (<www.usatoday>) because he didn’t it was unhealthy. What has happened, to self control and personal responsibility? The individual and the parents are the ones to blame for American’s obesity.

It is a parent’s responsibility to care for their child and therefore they are also responsible for their health and what they consume. A parent would not let their child do drugs, so why do they allow them to overindulge on soft drinks and unhealthy food if they both harm your health. In The Battle Against Fast Food Begins At Home Daniel Weintraub states, “It is a parents – not the government, not the fast-food companies, not the video-game manufacturers – who are responsible for teaching kids healthy eating and exercising habits” (Weintraub42). Parents much teach children how to how to exercise and get involved in physical activities. If they fail to do so they are setting their children on a path of lifetime health problems. Many parents allow and approve their child’s sedentary behavior without thinking about the consequences. Eating junk food and playing video games everyday is not benefiting them in any way, and who is responsible to get them off the couch and shooting hoops? McDonalds, Burger King, Carl’s Jr, Jack in The Box? No, of course not. It is parent’s duty as the one who cares for the child. Some people may think companies lure kids into buying food with cartoons, truth is parents need to teach children how to look out for these marketing strategies companies use because that is something they will need to know when it comes to important choices in life, like choosing auto insurance, credit companies and so forth. If children obesity

An adult individual unlike a child can make independent decisions but Americans often make the wrong decisions when it comes to managing their diets. A trip to the market could save you money an unneeded calorie intake. You can cook your own meals and know what you’re eating and manage your caloric intake but Americans simply have become addicted to fast- food, and it is their lack of discipline that has made them so obese. Sue Widemark conveys in her article Reason for Obesity, that an attitude Americans seem to have is that of “Eating is some kind of pastime…and if we feel that we are denied a bit of this fatty and very unhealthy food which we crave, that we have no quality of life” (Widemark1). Folks simply do not know when enough is enough. In Obesity Epidemic: Overeating is to Blame Mark Fergusson explains “To return to the average weights of the 1970’s we would need to reverse the increased food intake about… 500 calories a day for adults.” An individual has nothing to blame but their carelessness of what they eat and their deficiency of self-control when it comes to how much they eat. Fast-food would not make anyone obese if it was eaten in moderation. Everyone knows that too much of anything is bad. David Zinczenko in his article Don’t Blame The Eater argues that when it comes to food “Advertisements Don’t carry warning labels the way tobacco ads do” but when do Americans plan on becoming responsible for looking for this information? Certainly people who follow healthy lifestyles would ask for calorie information about what they are going to consume and the rest must learn to do the same. Over-eating is definitely a main factor of American obesity. Now, combine A lifestyle of daily fast-food and inactive behavior and you are well on your way to becoming obese.

A person, who is not willing to stay active and yet, constantly eats fast food, cannot expect to be thin. Your body needs exercise not only to look good on the outside but to be healthy on the inside as well. No one neglect their body in a way that would damage their health, but that is exactly what they do when they gorge on greasy fries and soft drinks and do not exercise. Michael Lemonick in his article “How We Grew So Big” writes that “Fully two-thirds of US adults are officially overweight and half of those have graduated to full blown obesity” he

Episode 1: Dolma (Edited version)
Made as promised for my subscribers.
The song “NY, Boston, California” was downloaded from the Archive of Armenian Music in America: http://www.armenianmusicarch.com/

This is what the site has to say about the song:
“Recently as I was playing at an Armenian event I received a request from a young woman for ‘New York, Boston, California.’ I was quite surprised since in over 40 years of playing for the Armenians I had never received a request for the song. While it is in our repertoire, as are hundreds of songs, we never play the song. [...] this song is among many that describe life of the Armenians in the ‘new country’”

Cook it and post a video response to let me know what you thought of the recipe!

Do i have a chance of getting into Berkeley? Or any ivy league?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I am 16 female Indian and live in New York and am currently a junior in high school. My gpa is 3.7. I am taking the act in a week and have been getting a 31 consistently on the practice tests. and Hope fully will be getting between 1900-2100 on the SAT. I am also planning on taking the math level 2 SAT and the US history SAT in June. I have taking 1 ap last year and one this year this year i am also taking other College level courses such as Supa U.S history, College Pre Calc and college marketing (i hope to pursue business). Next year i am planning on taking College accounting, Supa sociology, Ap micro, AP Satistics, Ap calculus
Extra Curricular: President and Founder of Diversity club in my school raised over $400 for Haiti, Member of Deca for 3 years went into the state level of competition in two of those years. Member of investment club for two years. Played for jv tennis sophomore year and varsity swim this year. have been doing Indian classical dance for 7 years performed at many different places. performed twice in school.
Community service and volunteer work: Active volunteer at my local library and temple. volunteered 30 hours over the summer with a nonprofit organization. This summer doing volunteer work in both spain and india in India i am planning on creating a system in which villagers can have easy access to water. possibly an internship as well.
Hobbies: Painting, photography. cooking

Your GPA is too low for these schools. For Berkeley, the unweighted GPA should be at least 3.75, although exceptions are sometimes made. For the Ivies it is best to have a GPA of at least 3.85, although exceptions are also made. Applicants need at least 2000 on the SAT to have a chance at admission to these schools, but due to your GPA, a score of at least 2100 would be much more be beneficial.

You should apply to at least two easier schools as "safeties". The Ivies as a group admit well under 15% of applicants and most applicants will have higher academic qualifications than yours.

Best wishes.

Horseback Riding In Arizona

A woman from New York was driving through a remote part of Arizona when her car broke down. An American Indian named "Little Feather" came along on horseback and offered her a ride to a nearby town. She climbed up behind him on the horse, and they rode off.

The ride was uneventful, except that every few minutes Little Feather would let out a "Yeeee-haaaa!" so loud that it echoed from the surrounding hills. When they arrived in town, he let her off at the local service station, yelled one final "Yeeee-haaaa!" and rode off.

"What on earth did you say to Little Feather to get him so excited?" asked the service-station attendant.

"Nothing," the woman answered. "I just sat behind him on the horse, put my arms around his waist, and held onto the saddle horn so I wouldn’t fall off."

The attendant laughed and shook his head. "Lady," he said, "Little Feather doesn’t use a saddle!"

Looks Of Vice

A frustrated man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a some of dollars for dinner.

The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?" the man asked.

"No, I don’t waste time fishing," the homeless man said. "I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.

"Are you out of your mind?" replied the homeless man. "I haven’t played golf in twenty years, sir!"

"Will you spend the money on a woman in the red light district instead of food?" the man asked.

"What disease would I get for ten lousy bucks?" exclaimed the homeless man.

"Well," said the man, "I’m not going to give you the money.

Instead, I’m going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I’m dirty, and I probably smell pretty disgusting."

The man replied, "That’s all right. I want her to see and accept what a man looks like after he has given up the vices of Beer, Fishing, Golf and S*x."

Dirty but funny lol and just how i like them. Have a star for making me laugh.

Authors@Google: Masaharu Morimoto

Monday, July 26th, 2010

Iron Chef Morimoto Visited Google’s NYC campus on November 12, 2007 to discuss his new book “The New Art of Japanese Cooking”. He also gave an entertaining cooking demonstration and answered Googler’s questions.

About the Chef:
Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Iron Chef Japanese Masaharu Morimoto trained in a sushi restaurant before moving to the U.S. in 1985 at the age of 30. After working in several restaurants, he joined the highly acclaimed Nobu restaurant in New York City.

Morimoto polished his craft in New York’s melting pot and became a state-of-the-art world chef. His cutting-edge cuisine attracted the attention of Iron Chef’ producers, who invited him to become a Japanese Iron Chef. His skill, which outshines the trademark diamond stud in his left ear, has been recognized all around the world. While his cooking has Japanese roots, it’s actually “global cooking” for the 21st century. His unique fusion cuisine takes advantage of Japanese color combinations and aromas and uses Chinese spices and simple Italian ingredients, while maintaining a refined French style of presentation.
Morimoto opened his own restaurant, Morimoto, in Philadelphia in 2002 and a second one in New York City in 2006.

About the Book – Morimoto: The New Art of Japanese Cooking:
Recipes like Sushi Rice Risotto, Morimoto Bouillabaisse, and Bagna Cauda with Crab Naan and Eggplant Shigiyaki (a kind of eggplant parmesan with mozzarella and red miso sauce) all merge Japanese ingredients with Italian, French and even Indian classics. In addition to the restaurant style of many of the recipes, the book also features several recipes made on Iron Chef, which were originally accomplished in under one hour.

Those are excellent schools. There are many other excellent schools that you may have not considered.

There are several free online services that help you find a school that is already accepting students with your credentials. My favorite is College Matchmaker, from the College Board company. Go to that website, enter your personal information and SAT or ACT scores [actual score, not what you anticipate or plan on - ] tell them where [State or area or even by zip code] you want to go to college and what majors you may be interested in, and see what comes up. Then, make sure that you apply to at least three of the schools likely to accept you. College admissions can be cruel at times, and you definitely want to have some choice

Here is the web address: http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/search/adv_typeofschool.jsp

Also, it is a good idea to read what other students say about the colleges you are investigating. The best free site for that feedback is run by The Princeton Review.
