What is a good culinary college in NYC?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

I’m going to be a senior in high school and my dream is to be a chef. What are some good culinary colleges in New York City?

There are a few good culinary schools in NY. The first one to check out is the Culinary Institute of America located in Hyde Park. Two other good schools in the area are the French Culinary Institute and the Art Institute of New York. Good luck!

Collages that offer Culinary Arts Programs?

Thursday, August 12th, 2010

Im looking at collages and I would like to be a chef, but I have noticed that if you want to go to a school for culinary arts you have to either go to a culinary school or a art institute.
Are there any school around New York that are "normal" collages that Have Culinary Arts Programs or Culinary Arts as a degree?
I dont want to miss out on the normal collage activity’s like sporting events etc.
Thanks.
Normal Collage as in. Syracuse University, SUNY oswego, University of Buffalo. ETC

The Culinary Institute of America and French Culinary Institute are two good culinary schools in NY. The CIA is closer to a campus atmosphere. Also, check out Johnson and Wales.

College benefits for children of veterans?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

I am interested in going to culinary art school in New York this next winter. I am 17 and my dad served in the military for 23 years, during this time he was disabled. My question is, can I get any help paying for a culinary arts school? Where do I go to get this help?

Sorry, you’re out of luck, just like the rest of us whose father’s retired from the military. Apply for financial aid, scholarships, and grants. There are scholarships available to children of military, but you have to work to find them.

Me, I went on academic scholarships…. not begging for help!

High-End Restaurants, New York City?

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Hello, My boyfriend is a culinary school student and he is looking to come here as part of a work-term with his school. Thing is, he needs to work in a restaurant where there are actual chefs ( as in ones who graduated from culinary school) seeing as I live in Hoboken (very convient to NYC ) I figure he can see if some restaurants in New York would be able to hire him. But I don’t go into NYC too much to eat, and when I do I am cheap. So can anyone recommend restaurants that would be of that quality? I know tom cochclio (sp ) from top chef has a restaurant, but yeah could anyone help me out here? If you could give me the websites that would be great.

Gothem Grill
London
Tavern on the Green

My goodness, there are pleny of high end restaurants to apply at. He may have to start as a line cook first in order to move up.

Culinary School, goods schools, and any tips?

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Well im thinking about getting into cooking and stuff like that. I mean im only in 10th grade. But I really love to cook and bake. So im thinking of heading into that department. Can you please tell me of any good schools. I live in Connecticut and I am close to New York City. It’s just like 30 min to an hour train ride away. I don’t wanna go too far for college. As far as I would go would be VA. Maybe a little farther. But please tell me of good schools around me. Also if you have gone to culinary school. Tell me what are some good degrees and stuff. Also about classes. Tell me what would get me far and successful and make decent money or good money. Also any tips or a heads up about this Business.

CIA (in Hyde Park like already mentioned) is very good.

New England Culinary Institute is a GREAT school, and it’s in Vermont–not far away and absolutley breathtakingly beautiful. At least look them up.

Most of the schools mentioned are a 1 or 2 day trip from where you are to go and visit and take a tour. Culinary school is VERY expensive (like Ivy League college expensive), so I recommend touring a few before you decide. But SO worth it.

What should I do? This is totally ripping my head apart?

Friday, August 6th, 2010

I have been accepted to a culinary school in New York, and I live in Florida. My parents are working really hard to keep me here and I can understand why. But if I stay I will turn into my 45 year old uncle who is still living with his mommy and daddy. If I stay then I will kill myself because I’m doing something that will cause me to be miserable. If I go, then there is a possibility that I will become homeless.

What should I do?

They are not going to disown you and leave you homeless because you go off to school. You have to follow your dreams. Of course, there are closer culinary schools aren’t there? In fact, the Cordon Blue has a school in Atlanta. I know that it is adventurous to be away from home, but it is great to be close enough to visit. My son went to school about 2 hours away from me. It was very helpful when he damaged his cell phone, and was too busy to take a bus to the nearest repair center. And when his gf dropped her laptop, I ran down to Atlanta to take it to the repair man.

During the freshman orientation, there were many of the college’s older students who spoke to the new parents. They said that, other than money, their parents coming to take them off campus for a break was the most helpful thing. They spoke of how just a day off campus with their families helped to relieve the stress, and refocus them.

Please consider a closer school for your sake and your parents. But don’t give up your dreams. Good luck.

What Sort of Credentials Are Needed for Culinary School?

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

I like to write, draw, et cetera- but that’s not guarentee of a stable job. On the other hand, people always need to eat, and usually enjoy having other people cook for them.
So, going to a culinary instituate seems like a logical choice if I want a steady job.

One would take maths classes to prepare for a math major, or English classes to prepare for journalism. However, I do NOT want to take foods classes during high school AT ALL. Is that okay? What sort of things does one need to do to get into a good culinary institute (like the one in New York)?

Please bear in mind that culinary schools have very high tuition and offer highly-specialized training that frequently results in a job with fairly low pay, as restaurant jobs traditionally are. There are few high-paid chefs in the world.

What you might want to look into is a more general education–perhaps starting as an undeclared student at a community college or state university–and see what develops. Unfortunately, the intellectual level of food work isn’t particularly stimulating, and if you like to write, draw, and think, you’ll really want to get something of an education.

The jobs will take care of themselves. Right now there are an awful lot of kids graduating from these culinary schools, and they’re finding themselves in financial difficulties because kitchen jobs don’t pay enough to repay student loans.
