Cooking with MisterSarkisian: Episode 1

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Episode 1: Dolma (Edited version)
Made as promised for my subscribers.
The song “NY, Boston, California” was downloaded from the Archive of Armenian Music in America: http://www.armenianmusicarch.com/

This is what the site has to say about the song:
“Recently as I was playing at an Armenian event I received a request from a young woman for ‘New York, Boston, California.’ I was quite surprised since in over 40 years of playing for the Armenians I had never received a request for the song. While it is in our repertoire, as are hundreds of songs, we never play the song. [...] this song is among many that describe life of the Armenians in the ‘new country’”

Cook it and post a video response to let me know what you thought of the recipe!

Return to the Old School! Hong Kong’s New Martial Arts Cinema at NYAFF 2010

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

After 2009′s film, IP MAN, became a massive box office hit, savvy Hong Kong producers, eager to make a buck, unleashed a whole wave of old school martial arts films that went back to basics: no CGI, no fancy wire work, no fakery. Instead, they were all about blazing hand-to-hand combat, hard-falling stuntmen and lightning fast kung fu. In conjunction with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office New York, this year’s NYAFF features a special focus on Hong Kong’s new wave of old school kung fu.

The line-up includes Jackie Chan’s latest movie, LITTLE BIG SOLDIER; a rollicking action comedy starring a gallery of old school greats like Bruce Leung and Chen Kuan-tai, GALLANTS; an encore presentation of the IP MAN, the movie that started it all, and IP MAN 2 which has become the number one Asian movie of 2010, out-grossing even Bollywood’s biggest hits at the box office.

There’s also Hong Kong’s major 2009 blockbuster, BODYGUARDS & ASSASSINS, which we’re screening with DEVELOPMENT HELL, a behind-the-scenes peek at the making of this legendary “cursed” production; the cracked and crazy cooking kung fu flick, KUNG FU CHEFS; and the totally mad throwback to visually bonkers Hong Kong comic books of the 70′s, THE STORM WARRIORS.

Where Can I Sign Up For Mother/Daughter Cooking Classes In NYC?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I really found in interest in learning how to cook, and since my mom can’t cook very well, I thought maybe we could learn together. I always make a mess trying to make my own concoctions, but they never work. Is there a place in NYC where i could sign up me and mom for cooking classes ?

I’m in Massachusetts, and a lot of the "junior" colleges and culinary schools offer "recreational" classes at night or on the weekends. Check out some schools that have night classes. Also try the link below. They have "recreational" classes in all kinds of cooking subjects. They are at 50 West 23rd. If you can’t get to a school, pick up a plain-cooking cookbook: Fanny Farmer, Joy of Cooking…Basic recipes for everyday cooking with clear, complete instructions (even how to boil water!). Good luck and good for you!!

Do i have a chance of getting into Berkeley? Or any ivy league?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I am 16 female Indian and live in New York and am currently a junior in high school. My gpa is 3.7. I am taking the act in a week and have been getting a 31 consistently on the practice tests. and Hope fully will be getting between 1900-2100 on the SAT. I am also planning on taking the math level 2 SAT and the US history SAT in June. I have taking 1 ap last year and one this year this year i am also taking other College level courses such as Supa U.S history, College Pre Calc and college marketing (i hope to pursue business). Next year i am planning on taking College accounting, Supa sociology, Ap micro, AP Satistics, Ap calculus
Extra Curricular: President and Founder of Diversity club in my school raised over $400 for Haiti, Member of Deca for 3 years went into the state level of competition in two of those years. Member of investment club for two years. Played for jv tennis sophomore year and varsity swim this year. have been doing Indian classical dance for 7 years performed at many different places. performed twice in school.
Community service and volunteer work: Active volunteer at my local library and temple. volunteered 30 hours over the summer with a nonprofit organization. This summer doing volunteer work in both spain and india in India i am planning on creating a system in which villagers can have easy access to water. possibly an internship as well.
Hobbies: Painting, photography. cooking

Your GPA is too low for these schools. For Berkeley, the unweighted GPA should be at least 3.75, although exceptions are sometimes made. For the Ivies it is best to have a GPA of at least 3.85, although exceptions are also made. Applicants need at least 2000 on the SAT to have a chance at admission to these schools, but due to your GPA, a score of at least 2100 would be much more be beneficial.

You should apply to at least two easier schools as "safeties". The Ivies as a group admit well under 15% of applicants and most applicants will have higher academic qualifications than yours.

Best wishes.

From Culinary Institute of America to Boston?

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Hi, I’m considering transferring from my school in New York City to the Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, NY. I’m from outside of Boston, originally (Lowell), and my family and girlfriend live there. Does anyone know about any buses or trains that run from the Hyde Park area back to Mass and how expensive / accessible they are?

You have to take the Metro North train into NYC and then take Amtrak back to Boston.

what are some places that offer cooking classes for couples that are affordable in chicago?

Monday, July 26th, 2010

it is my husbands birthday and i am planning to take him out this saturday for a whole fun date. i know he would love to take a cooking class but i need to find a place that affordable.

I would contact your County Home Extension office…Now I say this from years of being with the 4-H program. They are part of the University and I know they do offer cooking courses that are very reasonably priced if not free…Also if you have a local community college, and there is a Community Education department, should be a part of the Continuing education dept, check and see if they offer cooking courses….I headed on of those programs and we had all sorts of cooking courses, including one called the newly wed survival cooking school.
Hope this helps
